Firecrackers, shimmering
Flare up in drops around me
Followed by some scattered shouts
Of startled exclamation
Sparkling dreams produce the scene
Of a perfect movie ending
Raining down around me
In a million whispered wishes -
"I love you", "I need you"
"I need you more than ever"
"I miss you, I think I would even if I'd never met you"
These claims are all short lived
'Cause each moment flips a switch
A million choices firing off
Not knowing which is which
Wouldn't it be grand
To tell the truth and stick with it?
Without these boring, substituting
Words to lose touch with?
The older that we get
The more we have to risk
And the words we shared that meant so much
We eventually forget
If it's not too late by morning
Let's revisit what we've missed
Piece together images
Of time we take for granted
What changes do you make
When you can't finish what you've started?
Cars lie dead with drunken feet
Our minds become our prisons
You swear these new year resolutions
Keep your head from spinning?
The older that we get
The more we have to risk
And the words we shared that meant so much
We eventually forget
Tonight I'll try and sleep
But my fear keeps me awake
My mind keeps winning races
As each puzzle piece is placed
If it's not too late by morning
Let's retrace the steps we've made
